This morning, Councillor Brockington informed the CCA that the Suya Spot Restaurant at 1023-1025 Merivale Road/1319 Shillington Avenue has been closed, effective immediately. This is the result of intensive work by the Landlord of the building and the Councillor, as well as strong pressure from the public, the community, and Ottawa Police services. Thanks must also go to residents who have been lobbying around this issue as far back as 2012, your efforts were and are appreciated.

The most immediate position of the CCA is that this is an important step towards strengthening public safety in our neighbourhood. However, it is important to emphasize that having a local business shut down is never the preferred result, and that in this case the long history of violent incidents connected to the Suya Spot made its closure a requirement in order to reduce the risk to residents and businesses in the immediate vicinity. We hope to be able to work with the Landlord — as well as other current and potential new businesses in Carlington — to encourage the availability of resources wanted and needed by the community.

It is also important to note that while this is a critical step forward, it is only a step. There are reports of a shooting on Lepage Avenue last night and Carlington has been subject to an ongoing series of break-ins, thefts, and suspicious behaviour over the past few months. Let’s continue to share information, propose solutions, and work together as a community — positively and vigilantly — to make Carlington safer, stronger, and more connected.

The CCA will post further details as they come, on this and other community safety issues. Please don’t hesitate to contact us directly with questions or concerns at president@carlingtoncommunity.org. We are also happy to organize a meeting or workshop around these issues and have been strategizing ideas already, so do share your thoughts as well!

Stay Safe Carlington!

Sincerely,

Carlington Community Association (CCA)
