Modernization of Merivale road (Carlington Area)

Postby amoderncarlington » Tue Sep 30, 2008 8:44 am

Good Morning,

I am wondering if anyone has heard of any (city/development or partnership) plans to modernize Merivale road shops and recreation areas between Carling and Kirkwood avenue?

It seems to have really improved the area and standard of living along Richmond road(although parking is an issue there). I ask.... why would it not work for our area, especially with all the new construction in Central park? Are we Carlington residents destined to always be labelled a "low income area". I do not believe that statement what so ever and yet I hear it all the time from people surprised we bought in this neighbourhood a few years ago.

Hello:

Our Association has been asking Councillor McRae about such a thing for three years now, but with no positive success.

We were initially told by her staff that Merivale Road did not qualify for a Community Design Plan since "this tool is only for areas under stress".

As it turns out that is not true. I have taken the city's Planning Primer Planning courses and I found out in the first course that Community Design Plans apply to a variety of situations including streets designated as "Traditional Main Streets".

And guess what? In schedule B of the Ottawa Planning documents Merivale Road between Kirkwood and Carling is already shown as being designated as a "Traditional Main Street".

So based on the above, Merivale Road does qualify for redeployment like other streets in Ottawa such as Wellington West.

And last years neighbourhood study listed Carlington as being the community with the "Greatest Needs" in Ottawa.

Therefore, whatever criteria is being used by the City of Ottawa, Merivale Road qualifies for redevelopment under planning tools such as Community Design Plans and the Newer Neighbourhood Design Plan.

I sent Councillor McRae a request to initiate a Community Design Plan for Merivale Road and she replied that she will ask staff to review their past decision to NOT do a Community Design Plan for Merivale Road.

I plan to follow up with an access to Information request on this matter to see what the status is.

Mrs. ArscottZ:
Thank-you for your offer of assistance in this matter. The board will have to consider which of the many ideas and projects it intends to pursue in 2009-2010 given the limited people resources available. We will keep your offer in mind. Could you elaborate a bit more on how you might be able to assist us?
