Fun of Fine Arts Part 1

Come join us at Alexander Community Centre as we explore many approaches to drawing the clothed human figure. The class will also take figures and place them in costumes or different environments to create inventive stories and works of art. 

Artist and instructor Marcia Lea has exhibited across Canada and her art is in many collections nationally. She holds a Master of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Education. She has been teaching art for over 20 years at many levels from the Ottawa School of Art, with the Ottawa Board and in many community centres.

Course Outline

Week 1 Figure Drawing Basics

- how to do quick gesture drawings

- how to draw the human figure

- how to create proper proportions

Week 2 Foreshortening

- How to make legs, arms appear to come towards you

Week 3 Drawing Hands and Feet

- Proportional hands and feet

- Individual character of each hand or foot

Week 4 Faces

- How to analyse the proportions of the face

- How to draw an imaginary face

- How to draw a face from a model

Week 5 Adding Costumes to the model

- Model poses with costumes that students bring in

- Imagining or researching other costumes

- Students can really use their imagination to make the figure into a character!

Week 6 Backgrounds for the figures

- Students will create their backgrounds or stories for the figures

- How to create a landscape background for the students' chosen characters

- Horizon lines

Week 7 Interior Backgrounds

- Exploring the technique of 1 point perspective to create an interior scene

Week 8 Completing a final project

- Students will work on completing their final figure drawing with costume in a setting of their choice.

By the end of the course students will have numerous drawings of figures, hands, faces and at least one more complicated drawing of a character in costume and a setting of their choice.

Summer plans with Odyssey Theatre and Carlington Arts

 Trees, stories, theatre and song! What a great way to spend the summer! 

Spreading Roots is a theatre-based community arts project drawing together elders, children, youth and adults to create a performance celebration of their neighbourhood trees through storytelling, dance and song, culminating in welcoming and planting a new tree. 

Workshop 1: Sunday, June 25, 2017. 1PM to 4PM Storytelling and sharing - Alexander Community Center
