Let’s adopt Alexander!
Let’s adopt Alexander!
Sound like a big commitment? Might help to know that Alexander is a park! In fact, our very own Alexander park, located in the heart of Carlington, next to the Alexander Community Centre at 960 Silver St.
With a basketball court, soccer field and play structure, Alexander park is used by many families and young people. In the past year, the Carlington Community Association (CCA) launched two hugely popular events there: the Carlington Cup – our annual neighbourhood shinny hockey competition – and the Carlington Family Fun Day, which drew more than 500 people on Victoria Day long weekend.
Now this fall the CCA plans to adopt Alexander park, through the City of Ottawa’s Adopt-a-Park program. In addition to organizing big clean-up campaigns twice a year, Alexander will become “ground zero” for a mass tulip bulb planting this fall, as part of the CCA’s Carlington Tulip Initiative.
And we will be looking for more ideas about how to make Alexander a great asset for our community!
For more information or to get involved, contact Marc or come out to the CCA’s general meeting on September 11, 7pm at the Alexander Community Centre.
P.S.–Check out these great before/after shots from our first round of Alexander improvement!

The City has been quick about removing graffiti on the center. Still waiting for the final adopt-a-park approval. Hopefully they wont have a problem jumping on the bandwagon.
Love the idea about more garbage cans. The City was great about dropping off extra cans for the Carlington Family Fun Day. We could make a request for a few extra permanently. More than anything though we’ll need volunteers to help come Fall clean up/planting time! Get in touch!
Great idea! One simple thing would be to get more garbage cans — especially near the Shillington entrace by Mac’s milk. Many people buy a snack and head to the park, only to throw the wrapper on the ground. I called 311 once about it, but ever got very far….maybe you would have more say!
What a great initiative. Alexander has been looking rather battle worn for some time and could use some rejuvenation. I made an effort a year ago to report the graffitti and to have the pool rules sign replaced. Both areas were actioned in short order. The play area sure could use a good raking and having the sand put back where it started. The little things can make a big difference. Way to go CCA!
